Associate Civil Engineer
This position is for Associate Civil Engineer. With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.
This position is in the Development Review Section within the Engineering and Water Resources Division of the Department of Utilities (DOU). This position is primarily responsible for subdivision plan review related to water, wastewater, and/or drainage requirements, reviewing construction material submittals, and addressing Requests for Information (RFI) during construction projects. Additionally, this position assists in commercial building permit reviews and ensures all assigned plan checks are completed accurately and meet the review requirements. Responsibilities may include answering DOU (water, wastewater & drainage) related questions, coordinating with DOU field staff, reviewing proposed abandonments of DOU infrastructure, DOU Encroachment Permit Review, and/or creating fee estimates.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a highly motivated self-starter and team player who can meet deadlines and learn on the job. Some development plan review and/or plan creation experience related to water, wastewater and drainage infrastructure is preferred.
To perform professional civil engineering work in the planning, design, technical investigation, and construction of projects in the areas of public works, transportation, hydraulics, and structural engineering.
Assistant Civil Engineer: This is the journey level class in the professional civil engineering series not requiring registration. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Junior Engineer. Incumbents of this class perform the moderately difficult professional engineering work in civil engineering. Assistant Civil Engineers are normally considered to be of a continuing training status and as assigned responsibilities and breadth of knowledge increase with experience, and registration is received, may reasonably expect their positions to be reassigned to the next higher class of Associate Civil Engineer.
Associate Civil Engineer: This is the full journey level class in the civil engineering series requiring registration. Positions in the class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Assistant Civil Engineer, or, when filled from the outside, require prior advanced professional civil engineering work experience. An Associate Civil Engineer works under general supervision and is expected to complete complex civil engineering assignments requiring the use of judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies, and determining work assignments. Work in this class is distinguished from that of the Assistant Civil Engineer class by the greater complexity of the assignments received and by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate.
Direction is provided by a higher level professional engineer or a division head level position. Responsibilities of an Associate Civil Engineer may include the direct or indirect supervision of lower level professional engineers and technical personnel. Responsibilities of an Assistant Civil Engineer may include the technical or functional supervision of technical personnel.
