Contract Technical Animator / In-Engine Animation Implementer
Job Type: Contract / Freelance
Location: Remote
Pay: $25–$50/hr or fixed project rate of approximately $2,500–$6,000
Project Length: Short-term, with potential for ongoing future work
About the Role
We are developing an indie 3D game demo and are looking for a Technical Animator / In-Engine Animation Implementer to help integrate a small set of character animations into the game.
This is not a 3D Animator position.
We are not primarily looking for someone to create animations in Blender, Maya, or other 3D software. We are looking for someone who specializes in making animations work correctly in Godot. 3D animation experience is required.
The main focus is implementing animations through systems like animation trees, state machines, blend trees, scripting hooks, animation events, transitions, IK, and gameplay logic.
This is a short-term contract position, but we are looking for an ongoing working relationship that could expand into a full-time or part-time paid position.
Responsibilities
• Implement approximately 20 basic character animations in-engine.
• Set up animation state machines, blend trees, or Godot/Unity equivalent systems.
• Tweak or revise existing animations in Blender, or possibly create new ones.
• Connect animations to gameplay scripts and character-controller logic.
• Add animation events or function calls where needed.
• Polish timing, transitions, and responsiveness.
• Troubleshoot import, rig, root motion, retargeting, or playback issues.
• Help establish a clean animation implementation workflow for the demo.
Ideal Candidate
You may be a good fit if you have experience as a:
• Animation Technical Artist
• Gameplay Programmer with animation-system experience
• Game developer for Unity, Unreal, or Godot
• 3D Animator with 3D modeling and animation experience in Blender
Experience with Godot 4.x is strongly preferred, but Unity or Unreal Engine experience is also relevant.
Nice to Have
• Experience with third-person character controllers.
• Experience with Godot AnimationTree, Unity Animator, blend trees, or similar systems.
• Intermediate Blender knowledge for checking exports or revising animations.
• Experience with IK, animation layering, or procedural animation.
Compensation
We are open to hourly or milestone-based pricing.
Expected range:
• Hourly: $25–$50/hr
• Fixed project: approximately $2,500–$6,000, depending on scope and experience
How to Apply
Please include:
• Examples of animation implementation work inside a game engine.
• Any examples of relevant work, such as game development or 3D modeling.
• Your rate and availability.
Pay: $25.00 - $50.00 per hour
Benefits:
• Flexible schedule
Application Question(s):
• How many years of experience do you have with 3D modeling and animation?
• What programming languages are you most familiar with? How many years of experience do you have with them?
