Job Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced Special Education Assistant to support our students with unique learning needs. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in assisting our instructors in planning and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), providing teaching assistance to individual students and small groups, and ensuring the effective delivery of student learning activities. Key Responsibilities
- Assist Special Education instructors in planning and implementing student IEPs, providing teaching assistance to individual students and small groups, and monitoring student performance.
- Provide attendant care for moderately and severely handicapped and/or emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disruptive students, including assisting with feeding, dressing, and toileting needs.
- Prepare and return materials for classroom use, locate necessary supplies, reproduce class notes and handouts, and maintain a clean and organized classroom environment.
- Enter student IEPs into a computer system, print student data files, and maintain accurate records.
- Assist professional staff with administrative tasks, such as typing, filing, duplicating, and organizing materials for distribution.
- Grade student projects and exams using specified criteria, maintain attendance records, and assist with screening and testing procedures for students referred for Special Education.
- Assist Special Education instructors in scheduling parent conferences, IEP meetings, and student visits to the school nurse.
- Provide other administrative assistance as needed, such as proctoring student detentions, picking up student prescriptions, and transporting/accompanying students to therapy sessions.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must meet the following essential qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years of college (at least 48-semester hour credits), Associate's degree, or pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.
- Previous experience providing attendant care within an emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered and/or self-contained environment (six months of experience is preferred).
- A valid Alaska Driver's License (or willingness to obtain one).
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to assist students, and lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 40 pounds occasionally.
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Experience working with students with diverse learning needs, including emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered and self-contained environments.
- Knowledge of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and experience with IEP software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, instructors, and other staff members.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
