Position Summary:
The Underwriter is responsible for underwriting residential mortgage loans in compliance with applicable agency, government, investor, and secondary market guidelines. Underwriting responsibilities will align with the candidate’s experience and certifications.
Core Responsibilities (All Tracks):
- Underwrite residential mortgage loans through final approval
- Review credit, income, assets, and collateral documentation
- Analyze and calculate borrower income using U.S. tax returns and supporting documentation
- Issue, review, and clear underwriting conditions
- Identify potential risk factors and discrepancies
- Partner with Processing, Closing, Quality Control, and other internal departments to support timely and compliant loan approvals
Track-Specific Qualifications:
Conventional/Government Underwriter Track (FHA/VA):
- Minimum 2 years underwriting FNMA and FHLMC loans
- Strong income calculation skills across applicable tax schedules
-Minimum 3 years underwriting FHA and VA loans
- Active DE CHUM and VA SAR certifications
- Strong income calculation skills across all U.S. tax returns
Required Skills & Experience (All Tracks):
- Working knowledge of the full mortgage loan process
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and manage workload effectively
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
