JOB SUMMARY: The Permitting Engineer I provides engineering support for the development of permitting packages for material handling systems throughout the United States and Canada. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, this position assists in preparing permit drawings, engineering calculations, and documentation while developing a strong understanding of applicable building codes, industry standards, and company engineering practices. The Permitting Engineer I collaborates with engineering, project management, and drafting teams to deliver accurate, complete permitting packages that support project schedules and customer requirements. This role is designed for engineers who are building foundational technical knowledge while progressively increasing responsibility and independence. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned: Engineering Design & Documentation • Assist in the preparation of permitting drawing packages for material handling and conveyor systems. • Produce and revise 2D AutoCAD drawings using established engineering standards and company templates. • Perform basic engineering calculations under the guidance of experienced engineers. • Review engineering drawings and documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to submittal. • Maintain organized engineering documentation and project records. Permitting & Code Compliance • Learn and apply applicable building codes, engineering standards, and jurisdictional permitting requirements. • Assist in preparing permit application documentation and supporting calculations. • Support responses to Requests for Information (RFIs) and permitting review comments. • Verify that assigned work aligns with company standards and permitting requirements. Project Support & Collaboration • Coordinate assigned work with engineering, project management, drafting, and controls engineering teams. • Participate in engineering design reviews and project meetings. • Communicate project status and technical issues to supervisors and project team members. • Support project schedules by completing assigned tasks accurately and on time. Continuous Improvement & Professional Development • Follow established engineering processes, standard work, and drafting standards. • Develop proficiency with company products, engineering tools, and permitting procedures. • Participate in training opportunities to expand technical knowledge and understanding of permitting practices. • Contribute ideas for improving engineering documentation, workflows, and department efficiency. • Demonstrate a commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction in all work assignments. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. TRAVEL DEMANDS: Typically less than 10%, with occasional travel to customer sites, manufacturing facilities, or project meetings as required. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: • Strong verbal and written communication skills. • Basic understanding of engineering principles and design practices. • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and customer documentation. • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. • Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting project deadlines. • Willingness to learn permitting requirements, building codes, and engineering standards. • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional engineering environment. • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Outlook. • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software is preferred. • Familiarity with material handling systems or conveyor equipment is beneficial but not required. • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, customer specifications, building codes, and technical documentation. Ability to prepare routine reports and communicate effectively with internal teams, customers, consultants, and regulatory agencies. • Ability to perform engineering calculations utilizing algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and basic statics. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to engineering designs and permitting documentation. • Proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Outlook. • Basic proficiency with AutoCAD 2D. • Familiarity with 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks is preferred. • Ability to learn engineering software, document management systems, and permitting applications. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. • 0–2 years of engineering experience. • Internship or co-op experience in engineering, manufacturing, construction, or material handling is preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee may spend time on the manufacturing floor or construction sites observing equipment installations and may occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. This position also requires extended periods of computer work preparing engineering documentation and drawings. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee primarily works in an office environment with regular interaction with manufacturing personnel and engineering teams. Occasional visits to manufacturing facilities, customer locations, or construction sites may be required. While on-site, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, elevated noise levels, and other industrial conditions requiring appropriate personal protective equipment.
