The Washington State Department of Revenue's Audit Division is now hiring a Revenue Auditor 2 or 3 position. Ideally, the successful candidate will be located in Nashville, TN having a home office in the geographical area. A "Rover" position (resides in Washington) will also be considered for internal candidates only and can be based at any of our state locations, but there is a large requirement for travel (up to 51% of work time).
Audit coverage will be based on the location the assignment dictates. In addition to your base salary, you will receive an additional 10%, assignment pay, either as maintaining an office at an out-of-state location or as an in-state Roving Revenue Auditor (not included in the salary stated above/below). The in-state Roving Auditor is required to travel throughout the continental U.S. as business needed dictates and travel may include up to 51% of available work time. A position as a Washington-based Roving Revenue Auditor does not require moving.

What does a Out - of - State Revenue Auditor do?
This position serves as a journey-level (Revenue Auditor 2) or expert-level (Revenue Auditor 3) auditor by independently identifying and conducting audits of registered and unregistered taxpayers with an emphasis on business activities subject to economic nexus. This will include independent investigations and audits of national and multinational technically diverse business firms, their affiliates, subsidiaries and divisions whose business records are maintained at offices located outside the State of Washington. Please understand, there is an expectation that the successful candidate needs to travel to do field work at the taxpayers’ locations.
The auditor evaluates business activities and accounting records to determine if taxpayers are in compliance with applicable tax laws and have correctly reported their tax liability. The auditor establishes or confirms the presence of Nexus with respect to Washington business activities using various tools including but not limited to taxpayer interviews, internet research and the Washington Business Activities Questionnaire. The auditor is responsible for effectively managing an inventory of audit assignments to ensure department and division goals are met. The auditor is responsible for managing the audit process. The auditor may assist or lead in audits of the largest national and multi-national technically diverse business firms, their affiliates, subsidiaries and divisions whose business records are maintained at offices located outside the State of Washington.
Depending on experience level, the successful candidate may be hired as a Revenue Auditor 2 or as a Revenue Auditor 3. The required qualifications are key competencies that have been successfully demonstrated through experience or education. To join our team, you must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:
Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and tools, including:
• Applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and auditing principles to reconcile financial statements, general ledgers, subledgers, and journal entries; identifying discrepancies and correcting misstatements with documented evidence.
• Use of advanced Excel techniques (functions/formulas, pivot tables, lookups, data validation) to structure, analyze, and summarize audit data; recording calculations and steps for repeatability in workpapers.
• Evaluating electronic accounting systems to validate data integrity and trace transactions from source documents to financial statements; document tests performed and results.
Proven skills in research, analysis, and problem-solving shown through:
• Planning and conducting research using Washington state tax laws and rules, relevant federal law, department policy, and court decisions to determine correct tax reporting; citing sources and rationale in workpapers.
• Collection and synthesis of relevant financial and operational data; breaking complex issues into manageable components; applying appropriate audit procedures (e.g., reconciliations, trend analysis) to reach defensible conclusions.
• Identifying risk exposures and selecting methods that address those risks; documenting assumptions, analysis, and outcomes clearly for review.
Demonstrated experience in planning and organization, including:
• Independently managing multiple assignments; setting milestones, tracking progress and meeting deadlines under general supervision.
• Regularly evaluating status and reprioritizing scope, methods, and time allocation in response to changing business conditions or data constraints to ensure timely completion.
Proven ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and persuasively, both written and verbally, shown through:
• Explaining complex audit concepts and tax implications in plain language to generate understanding and agreement with taxpayers and representatives.
• Delivering unfavorable outcomes professionally; supporting positions with evidence and applicable law; managing challenging conversations constructively while maintaining confidentiality.
• Composing clear narrative reports, supporting schedules, and future reporting instructions; ensures accuracy, completeness, and accessibility for the intended audience.
• Tailoring written and verbal communications to the reader; preparing structured, well-cited responses for petitions or appeals.
Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities, workflows, and policies, including:
• Demonstrated openness to changing ideas, responsibilities, strategies, and processes; adapting audit methods to diverse business environments and evolving data conditions.
• Working with a high degree of autonomy while contributing collaboratively to team efforts; maintains confidentiality and personal safety in remote and field settings.

Any combination of professional experience or education, such as:
• Demonstrated professional experience in the above (required) competencies.
• Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration.
• A bachelor’s degree in accounting.
• 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college-level accounting.
At the RA 2 level
$4,740-$6,384 per month (Range 53), depending on qualifications.
At the RA 3 level
$5,241-$7,043 per month (Range 57), depending on qualifications.
