About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Consulting Engineer – Transmission Planning & Advanced Power System Modeling to join our Interconnection and Power Delivery team within the Transmission and Energy Markets practice.
This is a senior technical role centered on advanced power system modeling, with particular emphasis on EMT (electromagnetic transient) analysis, inverter-based resource (IBR) performance, and transient dynamic reliability studies. The individual in this role will help lead and expand our internal PSCAD and advanced transient dynamic study capabilities.
In addition to deep EMT expertise, the ideal candidate will bring strong foundational transmission planning skills across steady-state, contingency, short-circuit, and transient stability analyses.
You will work on technically rigorous engagements supporting utilities, developers, system operators, and large load customers across North America.
This is an opportunity to:
Build and shape advanced transmission modeling capabilities within a growing consulting practice
Lead high-impact EMT and dynamic reliability studies involving inverter-based resources and emerging technologies
Contribute to complex interconnection and long-term planning analyses in rapidly evolving markets
Work directly with experienced industry leaders on technically challenging projects
Play a meaningful role in modernizing the grid and advancing reliability in high-IBR environments
Location
We welcome applicants across the U.S., with a preference for candidates located in or open to relocating to Utah.
What You’ll Do
Advanced Modeling & Dynamics (Priority Area) -You will help develop and apply advanced power system models to evaluate grid performance in high-renewable environments.
Develop, refine, and validate PSCAD plant models, including inverter-based resource representations and associated control systems.
Translate RMS-based models (PSLF, PSS®E, PowerWorld) into EMT equivalents and validate system dynamics across platforms.
Perform EMT simulations to analyze system behavior under disturbances, including fault response, voltage recovery, frequency response, and control interactions.
Evaluate system performance under high penetrations of inverter-based resources and large loads, identifying potential dynamic reliability risks and mitigation strategies.
Contribute to modeling standards, validation procedures, and automation tools that improve simulation workflows and analytical efficiency.
Core Transmission Planning -Support transmission planning and interconnection studies that inform grid development and infrastructure decisions.
Perform transmission studies including powerflow, contingency, short-circuit, and transient stability analyses.
Support generator and large-load interconnection studies, including work related to ISO/RTO and FERC-jurisdictional processes.
Develop technically supported study assumptions using system data and market intelligence.
Coordinate modeling datasets across RMS and EMT platforms and prepare technical reports and client-ready presentations.
Contribute to proposal development and project scoping, ensuring work is delivered on time and to a high technical standard.
What You Bring
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems
4–8+ years of relevant industry experience, preferably in transmission planning, grid engineering or generator interconnection studies.
Hands-on experience using PSCAD or comparable EMT simulation tools.
Experience performing powerflow, transient stability, and short-circuit analyses.
Proficiency with power system analysis software such as PSS®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, or TARA.
Experience modeling inverter-based resources, renewable generation, or large-load facilities.
Familiarity with NERC Planning Standards and ISO/RTO interconnection processes.
Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills with the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts.
Preferred Skills
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems specialization.
Experience translating RMS models to EMT environments and validating dynamic performance.
Experience developing and testing PSCAD dynamic plant models.
Familiarity with frequency response analysis, control interaction studies, or subsynchronous oscillation analysis.
Experience evaluating large-load interconnections (e.g., data centers).
Experience developing modeling tools using Python or other scripting languages.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or progress toward licensure.
