Location is flexible, within Alberta, dependent on the successful applicant.  The Team Leader, Financial Reporting role is a critical function within AFSC’s finance framework, responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting while supporting operational excellence across the organization. This role bridges hands‑on technical accounting with people leadership, analytics, and continuous improvement. The Team Leader plays a key role in strengthening financial processes, leveraging data and automation, and enhancing the quality of financial insights provided to Senior Leadership and the Board, while ensuring compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), audit requirements, and internal governance expectations. What will you be responsible for? As the Team Leader, Financial Reporting, you will be responsible for leading the month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close processes, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting in accordance with PSAS. The role includes overseeing and supporting the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements, providing detailed meaningful financial analysis, reports and dashboard to senior leadership and the Board, and delivering audit support for internal and external audits. You will also lead and develop analysts and AP/AR team members, ensuring strong internal controls, timely transaction processing, and effective service delivery. You will drive continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing processes, increasing automation, supporting ERP and finance transformation projects, and providing technical accounting guidance on complex issues and new accounting standards. Key elements of this role include: Leading month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end financial close processes and supporting the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with PSAS. Providing oversight and leadership for the AP and AR functions, including strengthening internal controls, optimizing workflows, and enhancing service standards. Producing meaningful financial analysis, dashboards, and reporting that translate financial results into actionable insights for Senior Leadership and the Board of Directors. Acting as a key liaison for internal and external audits, ensuring audit readiness, issue resolution, and continuous improvement of control environments. Driving continuous improvement through process standardization, automation, and the effective use of financial systems and data to improve efficiency and reporting quality. Providing technical accounting expertise, including research, interpretation, and implementation of new accounting standards, while proactively assessing impacts on reporting and operations. What are we looking for from you? We are looking for a motivated finance professional with strong technical accounting knowledge, leadership capability, and a continuous‑improvement mindset. The ideal candidate will have a CPA designation (completed or in progress), progressive full‑cycle accounting experience, and demonstrated expertise in financial reporting, variance analysis, internal controls, and audit support within a PSAS environment. You will bring advanced Excel, automation and ERP system skills, strong analytical and communication abilities, and a high level of attention to detail and accountability. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading and developing teams, collaborating across departments, driving process improvements and automation, and supporting change in a public‑sector or Crown‑corporation setting. CPA designation (completed or in progress) required. 4 years of progressive accounting experience. Supervisory experience leading high performing teams considered an asset. Demonstrated experience with full-cycle accounting. Experience preparing financial statements and audit requests. Experience drafting technical accounting memos or position papers. SAP and/or accounting software knowledge. Experience in public sector or Crown corporation environment would be considered an asset.
