Position Overview:

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Principal Engineer, disciplined in Software and Project Engineering, for our low-level platform software team located in Cedar Rapids, IA. This organization is responsible for developing and supporting our real-time embedded software for numerous processing platforms used in military and commercial avionics products and cockpit display systems including our safety-critical, civil certifiable, multicore processing environment.

As a project engineer on our team, you will be leading a team to complete the design, development, integration, and verification of our embedded operating system, applications, and drivers. We work primarily in C and Python developing software for embedded systems so proficiency in these areas will help the candidate come up to speed quickly. Knowledge of DO-178C / DO-330 safety-critical systems and secure software development is preferred but not required.

Candidates must be able to plan and manage project work for a team of software engineers of varying levels of experience. Regular forecasting and reporting of project cost, schedule and progress are expected. Leading the team through the resolution of difficulties and unexpected events is essential to success in this position.

This position is open to remote, hybrid, and onsite candidates. We will provide relocation to hybrid and onsite candidates.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Plan and lead work toward the design, development, and verification of real-time embedded software.
• Review duration and effort estimates for software development and verification tasks.
• Present project status including schedule and budget performance
• Assess, review and present project risks and opportunities.
• Mentor software developers in technical and process-related areas.
• Lead or participate in proposals and bidding exercises utilizing the SEER parametric estimation tool for systems effort.

Basic Qualifications:

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
• Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and develop solutions
• Energetic and proactive self-starter that builds sound, collaborative relationships
• Proficiency with modern software development best practices and configuration management tools
• U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong background in the development of low-level software and concurrent processing solutions
• Python programming experience
• Experience with DO-178B/C (DAL A or B preferred)
• Experience developing software for real-time operating systems (VxWorks, LynxOS, GHS)

The salary range for this role is 94,000 USD - 196,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
